No, I'm Not Drunk!: Taming My Parkinson's With Humor, Music and Charity is a non-fiction collection of memoirs written by Alan Jackowitz. The author found out he had Parkinson's Disease on the day before his fiftieth birthday, and had celebrated his seventh anniversary of that diagnosis at the time he was involved in writing this book. Each of the short pieces comprising this collection relate to life after diagnosis, family, music, work, and New York City. While the author wondered if the high-stress atmosphere of the accounting firm where he was working had something to do with his early diagnosis, at no time does he seem to lament or see himself as a victim. Instead, he just keeps on living, albeit with a slightly different gait and facial expressions than before, and he's been instrumental in helping raise money for Parkinson's charitable foundations.

I just finished reading Alan Jackowitz's collection of memoirs, No, I'm Not Drunk!: Taming My Parkinson's With Humor, Music and Charity, and I can't stop smiling. An odd response, one might think, after reading a book about Parkinson's, but Jackowitz's story is so much more than a diagnosis or learning to cope with a chronic disease. His stories are love sonnets to the city he loves, and the music, places, and people he cares so deeply about, and his enthusiasm and joie de vivre are quite contagious. Jackowitz's writing style is easy and conversational, and my only regret at reading his book was when I reached that inevitable last page. I'm hoping to read more by this likeable, funny and talented man, who just happens to have Parkinson's. A marvelous read that still has me smiling. No, I'm Not Drunk!: Taming My Parkinson's With Humor, Music and Charity is most highly recommended.
