In No Hug for a Kaylea Bug by Michael Verrett, unlike any girl her age, Kaylea is adventurous and loves exploring the world around her. Armed with a camera, an explorer hat, and a magnifying glass, Kaylea decides to take pictures of bugs during recess at her school. Everything seems to be going according to plan until she meets a stubborn purple grasshopper. As she struggles to get a picture of him, she stumbles and falls ... and wakes up in a dark, scary world and her life changes in an instant. As she crawls out of the ‘hole’ she fell into, frustration starts creeping in and she comes to the realization that there are no hugs for Kaylea bugs in this new world. A dark, spine-chilling, mean-looking ugly spider comes after her. Will Kaylea manage to escape the determined, formidable monster and bring back the cheer and love in her new-found world?
No Hug for a Kaylea Bug by Michael Verrett is a thrilling book with meticulously executed illustrations that are bound to excite any youthful soul. Verrett opens up the young reader’s imagination with Kaylea’s adventures and builds a compelling, action-filled plot. Every page in No Hug for a Kaylea Bug is full of color and thought-provoking images that kept me turning the pages. The story starts like any other ordinary tale, but takes a different, creative turn. The inclusion of the spider and Kaylea’s mission in the bug world was an engaging twist along the story line. I loved every scene contained in this book and I recommend it to any young reader who loves adventures.
