No Blues Cafe is a riveting poetry collection by Jon DeVries covering a wide array of topics. 'Freedom 1960s' is a nostalgic look back at the 60s when people connected with others in real life instead of being solely obsessed with their phones or laptops. 'Back Seat' tells the story of two young lovers getting intimate in the parking lot of a drive-in movie theater. In 'Instagram Model Blues', an Instagram influencer ponders how she should exhibit herself in front of her online fandom. 'Curtain Of Oz' follows a little boy as he prepares to return to his home planet and wonders how his Earth mom will take it. In 'A Wealth of Loneliness', a young man brought up in privilege leaves his sheltered life to live on a countryside farm with a loving wife and kids.
Tinged with nostalgia, humor, romance, and charm, No Blues Cafe is a striking collection that poetry lovers will devour with relish. Jon DeVries touches upon a variety of distinct themes that encompass life. From a throwback to the 60s to the age of Instagram and the TikTok obsessed generation of Gen Z, DeVries' poems have something to say to all. Despite the multitude of topics and subject matter, every poem shares a similar underlying theme of life in its various forms, regardless of time, place, or person. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of humor sprinkled into some of the poems. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed No Blues Cafe. If you're into poetry, you should definitely check it out.
