Nine Strange and Curious Tales of Criminals, Fools, and the Macabre, written by Jeremy Beck, is a unique compilation of short stories. Although it is classified as fiction, several stories are based on real-life incidents in Kentucky. Most likely, these are the stories based on crimes and at least one of them has been made into a movie. The macabre stories usually include frightening bodily changes to the main character, which sometimes includes becoming unconscious, or worse. There are no explainable resolutions to these stories, except perhaps in the imagination of the reader. All good short story collections provide a plethora of settings, characters, and plots – and this book will thrill readers who are drawn to the short story genre.
The style of writing in these short stories is concise, painting a clear portrait of the plot very quickly. The reader can immediately picture the persons and the settings within a few paragraphs. There is a high level of creativity in each story, engaging the reader from the first word to the last. On the last page of the book, the author shares he is both a highly-credentialed music composer and an attorney. Being successful in both artistic and analytical endeavors provides an insight into the great variety within this collection of stories. Some are factual, while others have a fantastical theme. Author Jeremy Beck has written a book that will challenge, thrill, and scare you in Nine Strange and Curious Tales of Criminals, Fools, and the Macabre. It is a fascinating, entertaining read.
