Nightmares from the Gray by Joey Powell is a young adult horror story that will blow your mind. Ronnie Hendrix awoke from a coma with a terrible nightmare. Tired of being bullied and having no control, Ronnie did the best thing he could to let go of his anger. He picked up a pen and notebook and wrote the most gruesome details about his tormentors dying. Ronnie felt better and returned to school, but that feeling wouldn’t last long. Before Ronnie knew it, his notebook was stolen, and one of his bullies was found dead in the same manner as he had described. To make matters worse, the death was claimed by the Neverwells, a cult notorious for its supernatural abilities. The Neverwells believed Ronnie’s rage-fueled details were the way to invoke a powerful demon. It was up to Ronnie and his ragtag group of friends to find a way to recover the notebook before more deaths occurred and the blame was put on Ronnie.
I had flashbacks to “It”, the novel by Stephen King, but Nightmares from the Gray was so much better. It had no disturbing descriptions, the pace was fast, the story was intense, and I liked the characters. I never felt distressed and always felt a rush of excitement as a new chapter began. I loved Ronnie and his endearing attitude. He was determined to find his notebook before it was too late. His approach was probably not the best, but it was entertaining. Leslie was a true friend who had Ronnie’s back from the beginning, and she never changed. Preston surprised me, but I enjoyed how he integrated himself into Ronnie’s life. The flow of the story was great, and Joey Powell did a fantastic job of creating such a unique story. I can imagine it becoming a Netflix series, and I know I would watch it immediately.
