NewCastle by William Wendell Walters is real southern fiction. NewCastle belongs to the Richards, a highly influential family, but the entire plantation is heading for disaster. The family doesn’t care about others, walking all over them without a thought. Wilbur thinks he rules NewCastle but doesn’t realize that his wife, the self-absorbed and vain Agatha, is pulling the strings, manipulating him into doing what she wants. Their son, Edward, wants for nothing, only love, the one thing he has never had. His closest friend is Noah, a slave to the plantation, a slave who wants to get out of the fields and become Edward’s manservant. And Ruth, another slave, dreams of being noticed by both Noah and Edwin. One bell is all it takes to change their lives forever. Will Edwin learn what true friendship is after being sent away or is it too late? Can Noah and Ruth ever realize their dreams? When Edward returns, he is full of revenge but what will the consequences be? Disaster is looming on the horizon and not everyone will come through unscathed.
NewCastle by William Wendell Walters is an amazing story set in the deep south. The first few pages pull you right into the story and the descriptive nature of the storytelling takes you right there to the plantation where the tale unfolds. It has some very strong characters in it, all developed very well with fascinating and individual stories. The language and the descriptions used all clearly fit the setting of the story. You can feel the tension running through this tale, a tension that flies off every page as the plot twists its way to an ending that will leave you hanging, desperately waiting for the second book in what is looking likely to be a cracking series. I really enjoyed reading this and look forward to book two.
