New York Restaurant Guide 2016 is a short guidebook to restaurants in New York that includes helpful information for those on the hunt for food in the area. The reader will find a list of restaurants, what kind of food they provide, the address of the establishment, and the website and phone number as well. Author David Justin Smith provides at least two paragraphs on each restaurant, as well as the occasional relevant quote or tidbit. Some restaurants included in the guidebook are LaContenta, for Mexican food, Bergen Hill for Seafood, ABC Kitchen, Tarif, and many others as well. In some cases, customer thoughts are included about each restaurant, making it easy for the reader to decide if the food is worth the trip. Also included are popular menu items.

Living in the Connecticut area, this guidebook should prove useful to me, as I am close to New York and many of these restaurants. New York Restaurant Guide 2016 provides one simple place for visitors, those on vacation, or on a business trip to find restaurants that might fit their tastes. Author David Justin Smith does a good job breaking down some of the menu items with helpful details. For example, I enjoyed reading about the waffles with flavored butter at Sweet Chick and the spaghetti out of a paper cone at Spaghetti Incident. As a vegetarian, I am on the lookout for specific menu items, so it was nice to have a go-to source for menu selections at these New York restaurants. I would have loved to know more about the author’s history with food, and I also would have loved to see pictures or perhaps the development of a star rating system, but I understand the purpose was to provide a short food reference for New York visitors. The book succeeds in that respect, and was a delight to read. I recommend it to those visiting the New York area!
