Finn Colville survives the destruction of her home and family as a young girl of 12 and is forced by the religious rules of her planet to disguise herself as a man to survive. In New Sion by Diana Green, the human settlers on a distant planet live by the restrictive Covenant. The rules are simple – women are to be feminine and only live to serve their men. Finn is involved in saving a farm family from raiders and becomes partners with Eamon, a bounty hunter, and Jor, an off-worlder in search of the Princess of his home world. Together, they face the hardships of the barren land and rescue the Krell Princess from the same raiders who had destroyed Finn’s family. Due to the serious nature of Eamon’s injuries, Jor and the Princess take him and Finn to the El Dorado space station where he can receive adequate medical care. This is just the beginning of a new life for Finn.
New Sion by Diana Green is a well-crafted story with believable characters of many different alien races. It is easy to feel Finn’s emotions as she loses her home and family, then as she attempts to hide her true identity and finally as she falls in love. Green creates a world with humor and depth that explores the notions of what it means to be free and how much people depend on themselves, others, and their place in the world. Enjoy a variety of emotions and outlooks as Finn follows her dreams and her heart in New Sion.
