New Question for Mouse by Fynisa Engler is a gentle, affirming story about being a foster child. Mouse lives with Bear, Turtle, Duck, and Mama Bunny, his foster family. His mom couldn't take care of him so for now he isn't living with her. A classmate on his bus asks him why none of his family look alike. Mouse is pondering that when a class assignment to draw your family makes him even more confused. Mouse wonders who is part of his family. Is it his mom, even though he doesn't live with her, or his foster family? After spending some time at the park observing other families and chatting with his foster mom, he finally decides who he should draw in his picture.

As a retired children's librarian, one of the more challenging and important requests I handled was for books about children with families that are different. Often, the books I've run across are very factual and dry. Fynisa Engler's book New Question for Mouse will be a welcome resource for parents, teachers, and librarians searching for enjoyable stories that foster kids can identify with. Mouse struggles with an assignment that many children take for granted. Fynisa allows Mouse to work through his emotions and arrive at a solution. The illustrations by Ryan Law depict a diverse group of animals. I loved Mama Bunny with her cardigan and glasses! New Question for Mouse is an excellent book that offers an understanding that all families are unique. A stellar choice to share with preschool and kindergarten classrooms.
