New Dawn (Divine War, Book 1) by Magus Tor is set in the distant future, where two best friends and exceptional medical graduates of Carooine City, Maicee and Benho, are on the path of a steady, reliable career. However, their past determines a different fate for them, with the arrival of a message from the battle weary Princess Ausanne of Britannia. Maicee and Benho will discover their true destiny through battles and some unexpected truths regarding their world.
The world building has some clear influences from Star Wars, but is well-developed into a fresh universe of its own. The plot is fast-paced, but never felt rushed. Great premise and a clear-cut writing style are also the strengths of New Dawn. There’s a number of characters, and often this could overwhelm some readers, but Magus Tor has given enough space for each of them to grow. The characters have enough depth to move the plot, and the gifted, newly graduated surgeon Maicee is my favorite, as I find his secret identity and past intriguing. I also have a soft spot for Niku, the telepathic Chamonkey.
There's a lot of well-executed action scenes that give readers solid adrenaline pumping moments. Perhaps my only peeve is that New Dawn is a tad too short as a first book for the series. That said, it is an undeniably solid debut. All in all, it’s an engaging and exciting read that will satisfy Magus Tor’s fans and entice other readers. I look forward to seeing how the story continues.
