Mystery at Stone Cove by Deborah Erdmann is an engaging continuation of The Tin Can Trilogy, blending family adventure with suspenseful mystery. The second installment takes young sleuths—Dominic, Forest, and Sailor—to the mysterious Stone Cove, where local legends meet modern mischief. The story, narrated by Dominic, opens with the trio and their grandparents, GB and Windsong, setting off on a summer road trip. Their adventure leads them to the expansive estate of GB’s college friend, James Wentworth. This scenic location, with coastal Maine cliffs and a gothic mansion, hosts mysterious events such as vandalism, cryptic messages, and an enticing treasure hunt around a lost captain’s journal and clues to hidden wealth.

The young protagonists shine with energy, humor, and resourcefulness. Dominic’s knack for leadership, Forest’s wit, and Sailor’s inquisitiveness make them relatable and endearing, while their sibling-like bickering adds humor to tense situations. The pacing alternates between lighthearted moments, such as lobster boat escapades, and the darker elements of their investigation, like sneaking into hidden chambers and discovering relics of the past. Deborah Erdmann’s use of foreshadowing and layered clues ensures the mystery unfolds in a satisfying, suspenseful way, keeping readers hooked as the kids piece together the puzzle of Stone Cove’s secrets. Mystery at Stone Cove is ideal for middle-grade audiences and anyone who enjoys a wholesome, family-oriented mystery. Erdmann’s ability to balance relatable characters with a compelling plot ensures that readers will eagerly anticipate the final chapter of The Tin Can Trilogy.
