Mysteries of the Mist is a fantasy and science fiction story for children by C.A. Rand. Coralee spends the summer with her grandfather, Rigger, a lighthouse keeper. While relaxing on the beach, Coralee hears a whimper and investigates. She helps a merling named Mist who’s trapped under a rock. Coralee is repaid for her kindness with a moonstone necklace from the Sea Goddess, Kleenah. It summons the Mermaids of Nereus whenever she needs them. She’s also told never to reveal they exist, or she will be cursed. When Rigger goes sailing and doesn’t return in the stormy weather, a concerned Coralee uses the moonstone to contact the mermaids to save him. Will they be able to rescue her grandfather, or will the wicked sirens do him harm?
Mysteries of the Mist is an enchanting story about a teenage girl who loves recreational activities and spending time with her beloved grandfather. C.A. Rand writes expressively, and her love of the sea shows in the scenic descriptions. I’ve learned the differences between sirens and mermaids, and I have always thought lighthouses were special, too. The illustrations are amazing, and so are the characters. Coralee and Mist behave like typical teenagers. The undersea setting is just as lovely as the land scenes. Even the Sea God and Goddess have their problems to solve under the sea. Mysteries of the Mist is a fantasy story and a delightful read for children.
