Mykal the Monkey is a Super Youneek Beast: A Children’s Book Featuring a Special Needs Character with Orthotics that goes on an Amazing Adventure, written and illustrated by Beth Davis, is a heartwarming reading experience. Mykal’s dad, a treasure hunter, often regales his son with grand tales of his adventures. Despite longing to accompany his dad on these trips, Mykal is unsure if he would be able to due to his physical condition. He was born with a “Youneek body” that makes it difficult to move his limbs. So, when his dad invites him to join him on a special treasure hunt, Mykal is both excited and nervous. What could this treasure be and how would Mykal fare on this journey?
I enjoyed reading Mykal the Monkey is a Super Youneek Beast by Beth Davis. I am confident that children will also be intrigued by her work. The wholesome relationship between Mykal and his dad is beautifully conveyed through the storytelling and the illustrations. Mykal’s father is extremely supportive of his son. He expresses his encouragement through both words and actions. I appreciated the author’s empowerment of special needs children by making one of them the main protagonist. All children would benefit from seeing children with “Youneek” conditions as being leading characters. Children with disabilities will feel encouraged to dream big, and those without will learn to be more accepting. Mykal goes on an awesome adventure, and I was genuinely happy to see him find his treasure. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
