My Side of the Story by Charron Monaye is a wonderful collection of poems which should appeal to women of any age. The poetry is divided into sections including Love Is All We Need, Experience Is the Best Teacher, The Dream Must Continue, Heartbreak Is a Bitter Pill to Swallow, Nobody Can Love You Like Family, I'm Moving On With or Without You and How I Made It Through.
Each of the sections emotionally takes the reader into common life experiences in which one dares to love, dares to be hurt and then, dares to love and trust again. The experiences and emotions cross culture, race and religion and are common to any woman who wants to fully engage in life.
The poetry is lyrical and, for the most part, positive. It focuses on the strengths common to all women, and it allows for weak moments without chastisement or ridicule. The author encourages women to release the burdens they have taken on for themselves and others and to love the self first so that others may be the recipient of the wealth of goodness women have to offer.
Women who have a difficult time conceptualizing experiences cognitively, as well as those who resist accepting the pain of emotional hurt, will be drawn to these poems. They are written in prose form as if the author is communicating one-to-one with the reader. The book is one which may encourage women to heal after hurt and to dare to go after love and fulfillment.
