Imagine being loaned a pony for the summer. For Erin, who is pony mad at heart, this was a dream come true. In My Pony for the Summer by Hannah Wright, it turns out that the loan, a Shetland pony with a stubborn mind of his own, is grumpy, temperamental, and somewhat scruffy. Perhaps it doesn’t help that his name is Donkey. His previous owners had outgrown him and he was feeling more than a little dejected. Erin wasn’t about to let this pony get the better of her. She was determined to become best friends with Donkey, care for him, and establish a lasting bond. The only problem with such intense friendships, especially when it’s only temporary, is that all good things must come to an end. When summer ends, Donkey must return to his previous owners. Can Erin endure life without Donkey?

Hannah Wright’s early chapter book, My Pony for the Summer, is an endearing story about the love that exists between a little girl and her pony. The story is told in the third person, primarily from Erin’s point of view. The descriptive narrative sets the stage for the story and develops the characters’ moods and feelings. Dialogue is used effectively to move the story along. There is a deep tenderness to this story that will touch the hearts of little girls who are horse or pony crazy. A few black-and-white sketches add another dimension to the story, much like the illustrations in Clarence William Anderson’s Billy and Blaze series. This simple story speaks volumes about the strong connection that exists between a little girl or boy and their pony. Beautifully told.
