It’s not easy being the eldest sibling. First, you’re the only child. Then, another child is expected. What will happen? The once only child is wondering whether or not they will still be loved or cast aside in favor of the younger sibling, the one who will receive all the attention, all the gifts, and everything that once belonged to the firstborn. The oldest child will be waiting with a mixture of excitement and fear. Things are bound to change, but will these changes benefit the firstborn? Or push the firstborn into the background? These are justifiable concerns that need to be dealt with gently and with compassion.

Kunal Das and Charvi Kunal have created a charming picture book story, My Little Sister. Accompanied by beautiful, bright, and colorful illustrations, this story certainly addresses the justified concerns of a firstborn child waiting for the expected newborn to join the family group. The story is presented as a conversation between a young girl and her mother who is clearly expecting another child. The mother gently listens as the girl lists all her concerns, wondering if she really will be cast aside in favor of the new baby, who she understands will be a girl. After the young girl lists her concerns, the mother gently points out all the benefits of being an older sister, primarily that the older sister will be the role model to the younger sister, a very important job indeed. The final page is a picture of two sisters for the reader to color, the border depicting all the wonderful things the two sisters can share and do together. Beautifully told. I love the illustrations.
