My Life: Escape from Communism by Richard O. Rafanovic tells the story of the author, born in Košice, Czechoslovakia, and the vagaries of war and the subsequent effects of Communism. But everything changes with the advent of Communism and forced labor. Living in a place with no access to newspapers is just one of the experiences of the Communist occupation. The author takes readers on the journey to escape from his country and into the United States. Follow him as he crosses the Iron Curtain on foot to find freedom.
My Life: Escape from Communism is a poignant narrative filled with both social and political commentaries, plunging readers into the years of the Iron Curtain and the prevailing expansion of Communism across Europe with the impact it had on the population. Richard O. Rafanovic writes with a great sense of history, exploring events that provoked the outbreak of war. It is a story of grit and survival, exploring themes of family, social insecurity, political strife, adventure and a lot more. The contrast between the experience of the protagonist in his home country and a new life in the United States is brilliantly showcased in this narrative. While this story is an interesting tale of survival, it is also a powerful indictment of war and the evils of Communism. A fresh read with a unique perspective on the repercussions of Communism.
