Marjory Evergood has shared her experiences of being her husband Mike's caregiver due to his MS. This moving book brought tears to my eyes, hope to my chest, love to my heart, and a better understanding of my way of thinking. In My Journey as a Caregiver, Marjory shares her laughter and tears. MS is a thief. It steals time, joy, adventure, hope, and a future. While most people think of MS as just stealing one’s use of their muscles, it also robs the clarity and use of their mind. Mike hid his diagnosis as long as he could, but eventually, the effects could no longer be concealed. After telling her story, Marjory shares the struggles of being a caregiver. Where are the friends? Is the caregiver reduced to a servant instead of a wife or mother? How do you travel with someone in a wheelchair? These, as well as other questions, are answered in this book.
Chronic illnesses are challenging. Terminal diseases are even more difficult. Marjory Evergood shares the difficulties and challenges in her testimony, My Journey as a Caregiver. Friends often disappear when they find out your loved one has a terminal disease. They may offer to help but usually do not follow through with the offer. It is difficult to ask for help, but caregivers must remember to take care of themselves or they won’t be able to care for their loved ones. While the caregivers grapple with their own emotions, they often forget about the emotional struggles the ill one experiences. I have heard the infirm say they feel they are worthless due to a loss of identity and capacity and are a burden to others (due to losing the capabilities to care for themselves). This is an excellent book for anyone who faces time as a caregiver. You will better understand that your feelings are normal, and you are not alone.
