My First Vegetable Garden Book by D. A. Batrowny is a photographic introduction to vegetable gardening. It’s meant for someone who has never grown vegetables or fruits from seed before. Yes, cucumbers and pumpkins are fruit, as they have seeds inside. Seeds are what you plant to grow more vegetables and get more food. Carrots and radishes make flowers that have seeds, but we eat the roots, which we call vegetables. This is me talking – the book is a picture book. It shows getting the soil ready in both pots and the garden. It illustrates getting seeds out of packets, planting them, watching them sprout, and then growing – both the fruit and the root. It describes tools like a rake, gardening gloves, potting trays, watering cans, and wheelbarrows. It shows children learning to garden, an activity that the whole family can learn and enjoy.
Peas, potatoes, worms, rabbits, onions, tomatoes. Gardens are colorful and productive. They don’t just grow food for our tables. They form experiences that bring families closer together and help everyone appreciate food more. If you want to start a garden with children, My First Vegetable Garden Book by D. A. Batrowny is a fine place to begin. You might want to follow it up with a trip to a nursery or hardware store to pick out seeds with your family. Planting seeds, waiting for them to come up, then seeing those first cotyledons, can be the first sign of Spring. The colorful photos and simple descriptions in this book are an invitation to start a garden.
