My Farts Don't Stink by Carrie L. Foshee is a picture book that is both educational and entertaining. Young children and early readers naturally find the topic of intestinal gas engaging. As they turn the pages and read the repetitive phrases (“I’m a …,” “My farts smell like…”), or as the book is read to them by an adult, they see and hear the names of a variety of exotic animals (e.g. hippopotamus, flamingo, sloth, panda, toucan, lion) and relatable food items (hot chocolate, french fries, strawberries, popcorn, tacos, lollipops). The pairings of animals and foods share the same beginning letter and are accompanied by full-color illustrations. A page at the end allows a child to describe himself or herself and to say that his or her poots don’t stink.
In My Farts Don't Stink, Carrie L. Foshee gives us a fun picture book for beginning and early readers. Children are sure to giggle at the title, let alone the contents. “Poots” that smell like apples, doughnuts, popsicles, waffles, lemonade, honey, gingerbread, or grapes? Don’t we wish? Besides practicing reading, spelling, and pronunciation in a humorous context, the book provides an opportunity for adults to have broader conversations with their little ones or students about their favorite animals, foods, and smells. The friendly skunk figure at the end reminds us that “poots” do stink. This is also an opportunity to discuss with children the common courtesies related to this normal but not always pleasant and sometimes embarrassing body function. A fun read.
