In Ann Herrick’s My Fake Summer Boyfriend, during a summer vacation with her family, Katie has the opportunity to be Alex’s girlfriend…fake girlfriend. Since she has had a huge crush on him, she jumps at the chance in hopes of getting closer to him. Just when it looks like their fake romance could possibly turn into a real one, Alex’s ex-girlfriend, Nicole, shows up. Nicole immediately goes after Alex, which upsets Katie, so she gets involved with Nicole’s brother. A fake romance, a surprising friendship, and unexpected jealousy make this summer one Katie will never forget.
This was a simple, sweet book that teenagers will enjoy. I think we can all relate to Katie having a major crush on Alex. Would any of us have turned down the chance to be in a relationship, fake or not, with our crushes? This book will easily remind readers of what it was like to have a crush and to fall hard for that person. Even though the story was fast-paced and the main characters weren’t always likeable, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It improved along the way, and I ended up dying to know what happens at the end. Heartwarming and entertaining, My Fake Summer Boyfriend is the perfect book to devour during an afternoon on the beach under the warm sun. I recommend it to any teenager or any adult looking to reminisce about their younger years. Ann Herrick did a great job, and I am looking forward to reading her other books.
