"When God created me I was the only thing on his mind." My Brown Skin (Hey Carter!) by Thomishia Booker is a cute story about a little boy whose skin is the perfect shade of brown and he is happy about it. His skin glows when he walks outside and his skin is brown and perfect like his mommy’s. Brown is the color of the earth and the roots of the tree. Brown is also the color of hot cocoa and the color of the boy’s favorite teddy bear. The boy knows his skin color is unique and one of a kind. Brown is his favorite color because it reminds him of his granny’s warm apple pie sprinkled with brown sugar.
It is a beautiful story which is about self-love, and the book will help many children accept their skin color and celebrate it beautifully. I like the illustrations in the book; they convey the concept nicely and give clarity to the author’s words, making them real and relatable to young readers. The main character in the story is adorable and I like the way he describes the color brown and makes it beautiful to readers. It is a cute storybook for bedtime storytelling and can be used in classrooms for read aloud and storytelling sessions. I like storybooks that convey good messages, thoughts, and concepts to children because it is easy for them to comprehend the concept, thoughts, and messages when conveyed through a story and with the help of pictures, just like this book where the boy speaks about his skin color.
