Did you ever play Hide and Seek and make a noise, so you got found really fast? In My Body Beeps! by Katherine Lockwood, Katie knows how to hide and how to be quiet, but her diabetes monitor beeps – that means it’s time to have a snack. She needs to eat to keep her blood sugar up but she wants to keep playing. Her snacks are in her mom’s bag. She’ll have to come out of hiding to get food. Will her beeping ruin everything? Luckily, she’s hiding with Olivia who gives her a juice box. But Olivia wheezes with asthma. Now, they’re both making a noise. They giggle. That’s the noise that Matt hears. He finds both of them but they don’t mind because they have made their friendship stronger by talking about their medical needs.
My Body Beeps! is a picture book by Katherine Lockwood that teaches children about both diabetes monitors and asthma inhalers. By extension, the story teaches children what it’s like to have classmates and playmates who make unusual noises or have other health conditions. Just as Olivia helps Katie, all children can learn how to help each other. Olivia had her asthma equipment in her backpack. That gives Katie an idea of how she can carry her snacks with her and take care of herself without going to her mom’s bag every time she beeps. Katie’s mom buys her a backpack so she can keep her snacks with her. The book also demonstrates becoming more independent, so children can handle more responsibilities. The colorful, cheery illustrations by Olga Sall help keep children’s attention while they learn. I recommend this book as a helpful introduction to managing diabetes and other health problems.
