Long before there was women's liberation, there was Annie Whitaker Richie, and what a dynamo of a woman she was! Born in 1926 with learning disabilities in an old Pennsylvania family, Annie is forced to go through school in the same grade as her slightly younger sister Joan. Annie meets Doug Richie, whom she marries in 1949, on a blind date just before she enters the nursing program at Skidmore College. As a nurse, Annie truly excels, enjoying her studies and the job training. Stricken with hepatitis, mono and strep throat, she recovers but graduates as an RN later than her classmates. Then comes marriage to Doug, the birth of her four children in the 1950's, the move from Pennsylvania to California, their failure at adopting two Korean orphans, Annie's four month sabbatical touring public health facilities in the South Pacific, and Doug and Annie's gradual climb into wealth through buying real estate at Annie's insistence. Wow! What a life!
"My Annie" is well-written and edited with a plot that moves smoothly from the beginning to the story's end. Annie Richie is and was a human dynamo with a loving husband who stood by her through every move she made and she made plenty of them, even buying classic cars. Doug and Annie have been happily married for over sixty years and this book is a testimony to true love. The book does not go into detail as to why Annie was excluded from daughter Wendy's wedding plans, but to be the daughter of such a high-powered woman could not have always been easy. "My Annie" is highly readable, and will be enjoyed by readers everywhere who will love going along vicariously on the fast-moving ride that is called "life with Annie Whitaker Richie."
