Mustangs on the Run! is the second installment of Lee W. Collins' Etta, the Brave series. Henrietta "Etta" Jananne is a young girl who has inherited her grandparents' extraordinary ability to telepathically converse with animals. After attending the wedding of her grandfather's friend, Albert, Etta and her young cousin Jules, alongside their mothers, set off for a tour of Noah Gorge to see the mustangs roaming in the wild. They come across some dangerous men who hold them hostage. The men were trying to capture the horses, and now Etta and Jules find themselves in a precarious situation. With the help of various local animals, which include a raven, a jackrabbit, and a horse, Etta and Jules must find a way to help their rescuers catch the culprits.
Mustangs on the Run! is an absorbing action adventure novel for kids and young adults alike. Lee W. Collins weaves an engaging plot, complemented by some brilliant character work, to keep readers hooked in a story that is one rollercoaster of a ride. The narrative is fast-paced and has your attention from beginning to end. I really liked the team-up of Etta and eight-year-old Jules, both of whom handled themselves admirably amid adversity. The animal characters, such as Che, Melanie, Loop, etc., all have distinct and quirky traits that make them entertaining to the reader. In conclusion, Mustangs on the Run! is an action-packed adventure about friendship and the underlying bonds between humans, animals, and nature. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and if you love animals and action-adventure tales, you will too!
