Music City, written by Leona Bryant, is a tale of family and friendship. Shelly Shepherd was born to shine. However, her childhood was full of abuse and heartache. Escaping her past, she found true love and was living the American dream of family and a career in music. When a long lost relative makes contact, Shelly hires two private investigators to help her uncover the truth regarding her family. Shelly had no idea what family was supposed to be like. Truth can be a bit messy; you can dig up dirt or delight so would it be worth the risk? Before long, with good investigating and some divine intervention, family members are discovered and forever friendships are forged. New friends, new family and a new beginning, they shared a past and they would now share a future together.
Leona Bryant writes a down to earth tale in Music City. Written in third person narrative, the refreshing, yet surprising story unfolds. The blend of rural country life mixed with the rich and famous city life of Nashville’s Music City made an excellent backdrop for the plot. Bryant writes well-rounded characters. The protagonist is abused, but not a victim; she is portrayed as smart, beautiful and extremely likeable. Although each character grows throughout the plot, some grow to a dynamic arc, while others grow full circle. The cast of characters surpass their personal tragedies and walk into their futures with new found self-assurance. However, the resolution of the novel is not concrete; Leona Bryant leaves room for the reader’s imagination. Music City is a tale of tragedy with a feel-good end.
