Agape Jones is a retired NYPD police officer whose cell-phone ringtone is “Theme from Beverly Hills Cop.” Now living on Maui with his career brought to an early close because of a bullet in his thigh, Jones has become the volunteer head of security at the annual National Authors' Conference held each September over the Labor Day weekend at the Palekaiko resort. His seemingly peaceful retirement is immediately thrown into chaos with the sudden and suspicious death of Robert Dyer, a critic, poet and conference presenter. In the close-knit community of authors attending the conference, tensions run high as the relationships between several of the key conference presenters are revealed. Dyer was not a popular man, and any one of several high-profile authors and celebrities come under suspicion. Because of a lack of personnel and resources within the Hawaiian state police over the long weekend, Agape is left to his own devices to solve the mystery.

Think Agatha Christie in the 21st century. Larry and Lorna Collins, the co-authors, treat this story in an eminently readable and light-hearted manner. There are touches of humor and the well-rounded characters are quick to accuse each other of the horrendous crime. Just like his antecedent, Hercule Poirot, Agape Jones questions each of the suspects, revealing hidden motives, deep-seated passions and enough neuroses to fill a psych ward. The reviewer read this story while holidaying in Honolulu and absorbed the ambiance and atmosphere the authors created. However, it is not mandatory to visit Hawaii to enjoy this read.
