In Murder at Murky Marsh by Claude Peterson, lovebirds Sadie and Seth Hawks arrive from Scotland, enthusiastic to begin their new life in the US. They arrive in Murky Marsh, a nineteenth-century settlement that lies between Waycross, Georgia, and the region around the Okefenokee Swamp. Newly married, their affection is evident. When they arrive at the house of Sadie’s aunt, however, they realize that Murky Marsh is not the place they thought it would be. Plagued by the second generation of greedy, self-serving law enforcement officers, the town is a hotbed of criminality. When Seth is killed and Sadie suffers unimaginable physical and sexual violence from the heartless Pyke brothers, Sadie is left to survive by herself. Despite the ordeal, Sadie tries to move forward. But will her plans to bring down the Pykes ever succeed against the cruel schemes of the officers?
Murder at Murky Marsh utilizes few characters. They are developed effectively to drive the plot and bring it to a satisfactory conclusion. Sadie, as the main character, is brave and devoted. Regardless of the danger she faces, she does not give up her plans. Supporting characters such as Sadie’s aunt, Molly, also serve to highlight Sadie’s courage. The supernatural elements in the book create surprises which make the story even more enthralling. The antagonists in the work are intimidating and possibly undefeatable. When compared to Sadie, the Pyke brothers seem indestructible. This heightens the conflict in the book. The plot moves forward steadily which provides space for the development of the characters and the plot. Claude Peterson’s Murder at Murky Marsh is a gripping action novel that contains surprising twists.
