Mr. Forward & Other Tails of Loss by Eric Herkert is an anthology of short stories that offers a mixed bag of hard times, surprises, and the supernatural. I Absolutely Hate Cats follows a man’s deep fear, leading to horrifying consequences when strange creatures start appearing around his home. The Genie & The Wish tags along with Rusty on a search for his missing friend, uncovering a sinister plot involving a mysterious doctor. In The Devil Inside, Margaret is caught up in her sacrificial role and huge moral conflict, and Eye Izz Caht features two men tasked with delivering a disturbing package, only to encounter something way more terrifying. Throughout the collection, the hair-raising Mr. Forward often makes his presence known.

Mr. Forward & Other Tails of Loss delivers a chilling cornucopia of stories. Eric Herkert's wild imagination is on full display, and his wonderfully textured, atmospheric writing keeps readers hooked, and occasionally sleeping with their lights on. I like that each story technically stands on its own, but, when taken in chronological order, we see what connects them. There's character crossover beyond the titular Mr. Forward, which I wasn't expecting. Strange Frequencies is a standout for me, where a dying woman and her husband’s desperate search for a cure leads them to a shocking, dark twist. After School Care is a close second, with a mother’s routine pick-up spiraling into estranged husband territory, but someone else too. Overall, this is a must-read for fans of dark fiction. Very highly recommended.
