The author immigrated from Germany in 1972. He pursued an academic career at the junction of veterinary medicine with human medicine and engineering, and retired from The Ohio State University in 2006. Throughout his career, he published peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and an edited handbook in his research field of biomaterials. He also published with Pelican Publ. in 2002 a popular literature book dealing with another of his hobbies: Hunting with Hounds in North America.

Motorcycle Dreams is a fascinating autobiographical account of one man’s journey through life as an avid fan and owner of motorcycles. Author Andreas F. von Recum is a German immigrant who relocated to Ohio, USA, later in his life, but always retained a fascination for motorcycles, mopeds, sidecar rigs and the like, from a small boy well into his winter years. The story features lovingly-detailed history and technical mechanical facts about the bikes he has owned and admired over the years, but it also connects those machines to the places and people that he has known in his life. The result is a well-written and deeply personal life journey, punctuated by the passion and thrill of exploring the USA with wheels underfoot.
Andreas F. von Recum is a delightful narrator who is straight to the point in everything he does. He tells succinct and interesting tales from his life with excellent pacing and storytelling ability. His love for architecture, factual history and mechanics is evident on every page, as is the delightful development of his relocation to the States and his growing family and friends over the years. I particularly enjoyed Motorcycle Dreams purely because it is not just about the bikes (although motor fans will find a satisfying amount of detail in that area). It is also a heartfelt tale of the pursuit of happiness and how hobby-obsessions can sometimes enable you to stop and take stock of your life, to make sure that you’re prioritising the things that matter. An enlightening, warm read for anyone who’s ever wanted to follow their dreams.
