Mother To Elephants (The Story of Daphne Sheldrick) by R.G. de Rouen is a non-fiction biographical picture book for children, based on the life of Daphne Sheldrick, who dedicated her life to saving elephants. The story is set in Africa’s Great Rift Valley in Kenya where Daphne is portrayed as a little girl who enjoyed the outdoor life and interacted with various wild animals until she grew up and met her husband, David, head warden of Tsavo National Park. The couple rescued baby elephants who had lost their mothers and Daphne took on the role of their carer. The couple eventually had to train more keepers to care for the orphaned elephants until they could rejoin their herds. Daphne’s project has become known throughout the world as Daphne and her team took care of more baby elephants.
While intended for children, adults will also benefit from reading Mother to Elephants. Author R.G. de Rouen has not only created a beautiful story around an incredible woman but also teaches the reader about the reasons for baby elephants losing their mothers as well as how to rescue and care for them. Mother to Elephants serves as a reminder that wild animals should roam free and not be kept in captivity for too long or else they will not survive. The book is beautifully illustrated with colorful artwork and photos to complement the story. Many life lessons are included as well as interesting “Elefacts.” Mother to Elephants is an inspiring story that deserves a place on every bookshelf.
