Spencer Hatton has created a wonderful glimpse at all it means to be human in More to Crow About: Stories of Humor and Hope. Beginning with a number of tales, which Hatton labels The Lighter Side, you find yourself smiling if not outright laughing and alternately heaving a sigh of relief at faux pas and awkward situations that could happen to anyone. Other stories in More to Crow About, which is the second collection of Hatton’s columns over the years, reveal the personalities of family members, friends and local citizens, and each one highlights the uniqueness of each individual but draws comparisons to the similarities among all of us. Hatton uses humor, pathos and some down-home wisdom to show how special some people can be – and he has found a treasure trove from which to choose.
No matter the situation, some of which involve the death of friends and loved ones, Hatton manages to uplift your spirits with his gratitude for having known the person. Of course, it is more fun to laugh, but the more serious pieces represent important thoughts we all should entertain from time to time because they are vignettes of lives well lived. More to Crow About: Stories of Humor and Hope is a delightful compilation of years worth of observing life and living it to the fullest. Spencer Hatton is a wonderful storyteller and his view of things as a veteran newspaper columnist should be experienced by everyone who likes to laugh, cry and simply appreciate life as it comes at us. Enjoyable and moving, this is the perfect gift for yourself and other readers you know.
