More Than Ice Cream by Diane De Young is a book full of ways to say ‘I love You.’ The rhymes are clever and imaginative and follow a journey of enchanting scenarios that bring out the true meaning of loving someone. From diamonds to kittens to ducklings and buttercups, and even that perfect ice cream with sprinkles on top, the story is beautiful, gentle and full of love. Imagine snowflakes on your nose or squirrels with painted toenails, or even dancing or singing, or fluffy teddy bears. The colourful illustrations really enhance the rhymes with their beautiful characters and amusing antics. This story is a journey through a wonderland of everything that children love.
The author, Diane De Young, has beautifully illustrated these rhymes with lovely characters to complement this gentle and peaceful journey through some of the things that children would associate with love, and then explains how much more we can love one another. The story is a refreshing look at love and shows children how easy it can be to say those three simple words, ‘I love you.’ It’s a wonderful way to express the depth of love so that children can understand.
