Moonflower in Autumn Rain: Collection of Short Stories & Poems by Ilish Stone is an unusual compendium of stories that are deeply rooted in the human experience, some featuring surrealistic themes and others capturing themes like happiness, the quest for meaning, friendships, and relationships. In the heart of most of the stories is the recurrent theme of finding meaning in a world where happiness can be elusive. There are beautiful stories filled with symbolism. While some of the stories feature a sense of absurdity, they capture something essential about the human spirit, about the inquisitive mind, and about the elusive sense of happiness. Themes of languor, solitude, loss, and happiness are brilliantly explored and the reader has resonances of their own experiences through the book.
Ilish Stone has a unique and compelling literary voice and I enjoyed the originality in the writing. The stories, including the poems and the novellas, depict a mindset of characters caught between dreaming and waking, of hearts longing for joy, of humanity that seeks fulfillment. The poetic character of the writing caught my attention and there are lines to ponder such as: “Moon showers by the porch wood/a firefly glows,/and how long have I been alone—/but these flowers are blue.”
Moonflower in Autumn Rain: Collection of Short Stories & Poems is filled with the potential to entertain readers, writing that is original and that excites the mind in ways elusive dreams do. There is some beauty for everyone in this writing, a character to identify with, a note that strikes a chord in the heart of the reader, a scene that is strangely familiar, a feeling that we faintly remember. Moonflower in Autumn Rain is filled with humanity and realism.
