Montana's Mission: Protecting the Forest is the second book in the Wesley Club Mystery Adventure series by Victor Hess. It's the year 1958. After helping Florence Williams' parents from being falsely imprisoned for robbery, the young members of the Wesley Club are now working toward creating pamphlets on the various animals in the Glen Helen Nature Preserve in Ohio. With her unique ability to bond with animals, thirteen-year-old Montana MacCarthy takes an active part in the project when she and her friends unwittingly find themselves embroiled in a criminal conspiracy to poach protected animals of the forest. Now, Montana and each member of the Wesley Club must use their unique abilities to stop two poacher brothers and a baron from selling protected falcons, beavers, and two American Bald eagles in an illegal auction and rescue them from captivity.
Montana's Mission is a captivating story with a poignant and increasingly relevant message about wildlife conservation. Although aimed at young readers, I think adults will find this sleuth mystery adventure tale engrossing. Author Victor Hess doesn't miss a beat, drawing the reader's attention from the get-go and holding it until the end with some well-placed twists and turns of the plot and a vibrant cast of characters. Hess's writing exudes a sense of realism that makes the stakes feel all the higher, and you find yourself constantly on the edge of your seat, wondering what's coming next. Montana and her friends display a believable dynamic between them that you see among young teenagers in real life. As an animal lover and a reader of mystery adventure novels, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I think kids and young adults will have a blast with this one.
