"Monsters Under My Bed" is a poetry book written by Tamara Helene Arrington specially dedicated to her son, Connor Bryant Arrington. This is Arrington’s second poetry book after "Tattooed". This poetry collection once again shows why Arrington’s skill as a poet should be recognized. This poetry book doesn’t have the stylish, deep or even flowery verse as in others that I have read before, but the messages and feelings conveyed through Arrington’s straightforward style are just as powerful if not more. The verse is rhythmic, funny, soothing, and inspirational. I’m also very impressed with the book cover and the illustrations that go with the poems; they are absolutely beautiful and complement the book very well. My favorites are many. The first two are ‘Superwoman’ and ‘Hot Mess’ – wives and mothers will really connect with these poems. And ‘Black Widow’ is just plain sexy and alluring. ‘Box of Fruit Loops’ just makes me smile; I never thought that a poet would create poetry about fruit loops, its sugary content and artificial flavor, but there it is in the book.
"Monsters Under My Bed" is a perfect testimony or better yet, an incredibly open and honest look, at the problems as well as challenges each woman faces in her roles as a wife and mother. Poetry is not for everyone, but any reader, irrespective of of their favorite genre, can read and enjoy this book. It is simply inspiring, motivating, and touching.
