Monster on Mars by Ginger Marin is a science fiction adventure for all ages, a story about a little robot who must survive on the Red Planet in an undiscovered world. The story opens inside NASA’S massive Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where there are scores of toddler-sized robots that move along corridors on a continuous track, performing all sorts of tasks that the humans around them are too busy or lazy to do. One of these robotic fellows is Robo-Tot 3, a.k.a. Rolley, who is performing mundane tasks for the human staff. It’s just a typical day at work for Rolley when he suddenly disappears. He is accidentally sent aboard an Out-a-Sight 1 Lander capsule that descended on the surface of Mars. Beneath its surface, Rolley will discover the realm of Goolgianville and its inhabitants, and he is about to have an experience that is far from mundane.
Monster on Mars succeeds at being two things at once: an enthralling young adult story and a humorous science fiction story. It feels like a cross between Wall-E and Robots. This story's appeal is not limited to young adult readers. It works largely on its action-driven style as well as its evocative settings and characters that make it astonishing. Moreover, considering that this is a planetary story, anyone can relate as it transcends human barriers. The story has a charming plot, and Ginger Marin involves you with an idea and not just mindless scenarios involving close encounters with aliens. It is something thoughtful, an idea that is especially stimulating to young readers and amusing for adults. There is nothing complicated about the storyline and anyone can easily capture the essence of Marin’s storytelling. It’s a nice yarn to keep you company while on a commute, an ideal way to spend time.
