Until recently, money had never been a problem for Evie. With a spell here and a wave of a wand there, everything in her life is fixed. However, Evie now wants to earn her own money so that she can get all she wants and, hopefully, become a millionaire. Of course, she intends to use magic to get the lamron money flowing her way, but Izzy, her best friend, says that's cheating. Evie’s attempt at lawn mowing is a major disaster as she doesn’t even know what a lawn mower is. A dejected Evie is just about to give up on her business ambition when her aunty gifts her an egg, and out of the egg hatches a gold-vomiting Aureus dragon! Evie’s dreams are literally at her fingertips but the price of dragon gold is a huge one, namely chaos.

I’m still reeling from all the adventures in Magic Money which is quite a long read for a children’s story but the length is worth the thrill and there are lots of lessons to learn from it. Besides the great storyline, I was impressed with its diction; words are abundant, especially the synonyms. The adventure is illustrated with beautiful drawings and is ripe with magic and mystical characters, so it is perfect for fantasy lovers. This is the fifth book in the Evie Everyday Witch series, but it can be read alone. Elena Paige has created a remarkable read and I recommend it.

You see, Evie is a witch. Her parents are witches, too. But Wyndemere is full of humans and Evie’s family is the only witch family in town. There is nothing like being a witch to make you stand out. To make herself appear more normal, like a lamron, Evie decides to get a job and make some real money. That is, without using magic. That would be the normal thing to do. The only thing is that being normal isn’t as easy as this little witch thought it might be. Soon she finds herself in a whole lot of trouble, so much so that she has to turn herself into a dragon before she is forced to reveal to the whole town of Wyndemere that she and her family are witches. Sometimes good intentions and due diligence are heavy burdens to carry.

Elena Paige’s middle-grade novel Money Magic is told in the first-person narrative from Evie’s point of view. Accompanied by clever illustrations from the author, the plot highlights Evie’s industrious nature as she attempts one money-making scheme after another. Using simple language and lots of dialogue, the story is an easy read for the otherwise reluctant reader. Evie’s quirky nature and her indomitable spirit of entrepreneurship will have young readers both cheering her on and laughing at some of her antics. This is a great story to entertain and educate both hesitant and dedicated readers.
