Moms have a lot to do each day. From getting the children out of bed, dressed, preparing breakfast and a lunch for school, then it’s off to school for the children and off to work for Mom. But it doesn’t end there. After school, Mom has to pick up the children, take them to the park for playtime, go home and prepare supper, clean up the kitchen, keep the children from fighting and see that they’re bathed and in bed at a reasonable time. But don’t forget storytime – the most important time a mother could possibly spend with her children. And, once the children are in bed, there’s more tidying up to do. Is that all? What happens when one of the children has a scary dream?
Tameka M. Smart’s picture book story, Moms Never Get a Break, is a clever and sometimes funny look at all that moms do in a single day. Jayden and Jenny are two lively children, each with their own needs and demands. The plot follows the daily routine with frequent reminders that “Moms never get a break.” But there’s a lot of love in this story, too. Moms may be a multi-tasker at all times, the disciplinarian when needed, but moms are also the source of everlasting, unconditional love. The vibrant and beautiful illustrations help carry this story along. The simple language will help a young reader learn to read along and every child will recognize that often repeated key phrase: “Moms never get a break.” There may be some excited shouting when they see that line, written in bold pink. Beautifully told. A great way to teach young readers how important their mother (or caregiver) is in the smooth-flowing routines of their daily lives.
