Mom, Can We Get a Dog? by Anastasia Goldak informs readers that David wants a pet. First, he wants a puppy, then a cat, then a wide range of other animals that spark his interest. The hamster quickly lost its appeal when it bit him. Every time David asked his Mom for a pet, she responded with “when you’re ready.” David doesn’t quite know what that means, or when it will be, but he keeps hoping and searching for the perfect pet. Mom tries to explain by telling David that “Pets should only come to those who are ready for them.” The seasons pass and one cold, wintry day, David notices a puppy, shivering, alone, and abandoned. He doesn’t even think to ask Mom until he scooped up the puppy and wrapped it warmly in his scarf. He presents his case as being about the puppy and what it needs, not what he wants. Being ready means being mature enough to welcome another creature into your life and knowing how important it is to care for that living being.
Anastasia Goldak’s picture book Mom, Can We Get a Dog? is a touchingly powerful story about readiness, a complex and abstract concept that young people often have difficulty understanding. The story follows David’s search for the perfect pet and his coming to terms with Mom’s repeated statement about being ready. Told in simple language so young readers can easily follow, and emphasizing the concept of readiness, the story is full of lessons. The illustrations are colorful and lively, adding a deeper dimension to the story, and sometimes a bit of humor too. As David explores his possible pet options, both David and the readers learn about the many diverse and fascinating animals in our world, some of which were never meant to be pets. The story is clever, educational, and entertaining. Loved it.
