When former FBI agent Monica Cappelino has a surprise visit from her ex, Eddie Marconi, it brings back memories of their time together. Eddie is involved with the mob, and he's hoping to move up in the ranks through his dealings with his uncle, Salvatore Marconi - a powerful Mafia underboss. Monica knows this but finds herself falling all over again for the man she left and who now promises to be a better person. However, what she doesn't tell him is that being in a relationship with him is a ploy to get him to turn against his uncle and that she's back to working for the FBI. Mobbed Up by Stephanie Baldi involves a spine-chilling undercover mission to catch a brutal criminal. The characters are caught in a web of complicated love relationships, deceit, and fear.
I love it when a story's different parts fit together perfectly like a jigsaw puzzle. The plot in Mobbed Up is exactly like this, alternating smoothly between the viewpoints of the male and female protagonists, as well as the criminals and FBI agents. Monica's love life is intriguingly sophisticated. She finds Eddie irresistible but dislikes his violent side and his association with criminals. I was seriously rooting for her and hoping she wouldn't get caught in her undercover role. The book is best suited for mature readers as it includes strong language and a lifelike depiction of the mob. Readers get a neat, well-balanced mix of unpredictable twists, an atmosphere of impending danger, intriguing struggles and dilemmas, and other captivating storytelling elements. I would keep an eye out for more of Stephanie Baldi's books as her writing skills are phenomenal.
