Mixed Realities: 7 Stories That Will Make You Question the Universe by Naomi Augustine examines the proposition that the Earth and everything that happens is nothing more than a simulation controlled by AI. Those in charge of watching the world until the end of time decide to make a couple of bets and manipulate the simulation to see which one will win. Japan experiences shocking issues that send people to Singapore, Dubai, and San Francisco, where they discover how advanced AI technology has become. Immortals want to move civilization to a more habitable planet. Is a brother and sister musical duo the answer to failed attempts at winning auditions, or is it a decision that could end up costing a life? Can parallel worlds be crossed?
The seven stories in this anthology are a combination of genres that will have the reader hanging onto each page, anticipating what might be coming next. I love the concept of the world as a simulation and the original and amazing plots unfold in each story with twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. This author expertly crosses the boundaries of a genre and makes this become something completely different. Just when you expect to be thrilled with the way a story is going, Augustine adds a new layer that keeps the suspense moving. There is no shortage of originality in the entertaining way this author works, and I hope that she has more of these stories coming in the future. I recommend Mixed Realities by Naomi Augustine to adults that love a variety of tales.
