In "Mixed Blessings", a follow up to the book, "It's the Bass Player", Cabot Barden continues with the story of the lives of Toby and Nancy, of their courtship and marriage. The book also covers the story of their friends' romances and marriages. The families play a large role in the young peoples' lives, sharing their happiness and sorrows. The families bind together to help the young people overcome the sorrows they suffer. Toby, Fred, and Corey continue the dream they have to become a band, to record, and to write music to become well known in the music business. "Mixed Blessings" is also the story of a southern small town and the people who live there, the churches, the residents, and the music of their lives.
