Miraculous: The True Story of the Padre of Guadalcanal by Robert T. Fertig is the story of how one act of kindness can change the lives of other people. Patsy was alone in the world, or so she thought. She was separated from her mother when the ship they were aboard sunk. She had no idea where her mother was, who she was and if she was even alive. However, her life took a surprising turn when suddenly a woman appeared and claimed to be her mother. Hopeful yet weary, she wanted it to be true. Circumstances and some surprising evidence all pointed towards the fact that she was indeed Patsy's mother. Patsy could not have been happier as she finally had what she always wanted. However, cruel fate had other plans for her. Just when she was becoming comfortable in her life, it all came crashing down with a simple DNA test. Had her mother really found her?
This was an intense book. Patsy’s story, the Padre’s involvement in her story and how hard he struggled to help her was phenomenal. The author was very descriptive with his imagery and the way he described characters and events. The battle scene in the beginning and the ordeal after that made me very emotional. The author did a great job at not only portraying the characters in the best way possible, but he also made them appear real and human. Their emotions hit me hard; Robert T. Fertig ensured that the reader could feel what his characters were feeling and go through the same emotions as the characters. For some reason, I was expecting this story to have a slow pace, but the fast pace was a pleasant surprise. Reading this book was a great experience.
