Miracle on Hammertown Road: One Man's Fall & Salvation is a nonfiction spiritual memoir written by Jim “Bubba” Bay and Mic Ruzich. Bay had always been bigger than his classmates in school, but when he went away to college, he decided to change that. He ran in place in the doorway of his home and managed to lose so much weight that his mom insisted on having him checked out by the family doctor when he came home on break. The weight would eventually come back during times of stress, so Bay developed the habit of walking after work. Most often, he and his brother would walk together while discussing their landscaping company’s business, but, on that one fateful night, Jim decided to walk in his neighborhood instead. While trying to avoid a car, he fell and found himself badly injured and bleeding profusely at the bottom of a ravine. Although he had broken 23 bones and fractured his skull, Bay managed to crawl back up to the road and to make his way to a neighbor’s front door. By some miracle, and with what he knew was heavenly assistance, Bay had saved his own life.
Bubba Bay's nonfiction spiritual memoir, Miracle on Hammertown Road: One Man's Fall & Salvation, is a fascinating read that will make anyone think twice about their own aches and pains, or lot in life. Bay’s story is a compelling one, especially when he talks about his own close encounter with the bright light and meeting with the being who told him he still had more work for him in this sphere of existence. Passages of Bay’s own story are interspersed with those of his family, friends, the EMT and Sheriff’s personnel who were involved in helping him, and Indira Velasquez, the neighbor who found him nearly dead and bleeding heavily on her doorstep. In one particularly moving passage, Bay describes the dreams he had while he was in a medically induced coma. His descriptions of the malevolent scarecrow, Sam, with whom he used to have wide-ranging discussions, are vividly described and eerie. Bay’s book is a triumphant one; he’s a hero in every sense of the word. I don’t think there’s anyone else I’d rather have looking out for me in a perilous situation than Jim “Bubba” Bay. His story is compelling and well-told and it’s an unforgettable one. Miracle on Hammertown Road: One Man's Fall & Salvation is most highly recommended.
