When the first few pages of a book give you chills, you know you are in for an interesting read. Millee and Me is a photo-enhanced story of the author’s journey with a haunted Raggedy Ann doll. The true story begins with the purchase of the Raggedy Ann doll for eight dollars at a boutique after finding her in a basket of other vintage dolls. Marcee Brightenstine, the author, has an immediate connection and continues to travel with the doll, snapping off pictures in various locations. Millee, the doll, has a personality of her own, often making friends with people, dolls, and squirrels, and even making her way into bed with Marcee. Over time, more unusual things happen, such as lights turning on by themselves, doors slamming shut, and child-like voices attempting to communicate with Marcee’s husband. As the author is a paranormal investigator, distinct voices were also heard through ghost-hunting equipment.
By far, the photographs of Millee were the most enjoyable feature of the book. She is featured in a truck, by a grave, with luggage, with other dolls, with fudge, and my favorite, standing on a wood board with a scenic mountain behind her. Marcee Brightenstine’s enthusiasm and passion for her haunted doll and the subject of the paranormal is obvious throughout the book, producing a story about a haunted doll that is a fairly light read. Will Marcee Brightenstine convince the skeptics? I’m not sure. But this was a gripping yet still highly entertaining story of a real-life haunted doll. I also feel compelled to mention that I read this on my e-reader, and while I’m sure I closed the reader to watch television, the story popped back up by itself more than once. Millee?
