Magpie Ridge Middle School's top detective buries himself in solving his classmates' unusual problems which can range from locating a missing bunny to the really weird stuff that sometimes ends up with an unwanted trip up the air vent. Mickie McKinney doesn't mind any of these so long as you're willing to pay him his unusual fee. But, once Sam Hayes punches her way into his life he realizes she may not be going anywhere soon and the very scary possibility of taking on a permanent partner is becoming a reality by the day. Will they be able to work together without disaster striking as Sam catches a new case involving a lovestruck Angus McDermitt? Find out in R.L. Fink's Mickie McKinney: Boy Detective, Troubles With Teamwork.
The wires get crossed in comedic fashion in R.L. Fink's latest iteration of this children's detective story. The storyline is simple and sweet in a way that is appealing to both the youth as well as adults and the characters are individually interesting. Mickie's bloated sense of importance is evident in his actions and utterances while Sam's witty ripostes and legion of comedic nicknames for her new partner had me laughing all through this delightful audiobook. I am particularly impressed with the way Fink puts together an entertaining story using a combination of choice language and unique storytelling. With its funny storyline and interesting subplots, Troubles With Teamwork is a book young readers will fall in love with.
Hannah Edelson's narration is smooth to the ear. She emphasizes the conversation between the characters in a way that pushes every other aspect of this audiobook into the background. If the objective is to make the story immersive it certainly does that. The best part of this aspect of the audiobook for me is the uniqueness of each of the characters she voices. It goes beyond their conversations to the slightest of inflections in their tone when expressing their moods. Beautiful work.
