In the secluded Remembrance Town, people sell memories for everyday commodities, and they are busy during the holiday season making new memories to buy gifts. However, 12-year-old Matthew injured his head, which affects his memories. With nothing to sell, he stays alone in a deserted cabin and forages for scraps of food when everyone else asleep. One late night, while savoring a bar of discarded chocolate outside a candy shop, he stumbles upon three men about to steal memories from the townsfolk. Matthew wrestles with his conscience; should he stop them or mind his own business since the townsfolk never offer him any aid?
The context of Memorable Christmas (A Short Story) by E.C. Fisher reminds me of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! but with a different concept. The narrative is straightforward and the pacing as well as the plotting are solid. Matthew is a relatable character and a perfect protagonist to convey the message of how memories, especially of our loved ones, are precious and should not be forgotten. The moral sense is also highlighted through the action of the young boy who himself received no help from other people. The story has a nice ending, albeit a little abrupt. I would love to know more about the fate of the thieves. Even so, this is a poignant Christmas short story from E.C. Fisher that is suitable for all ages.
