Memes of Loss and Devotion by Darren White is an anthology of thrilling futuristic stories that reveals our strengths and failings, as well as challenges that we human beings have to face. Darren White’s deft writing style is perhaps one of the best I have read so far. The stories themselves are an enigma we humans long to decipher. White gives us the perfect speculation regarding subjects that some of us would not dare to think of, much less question them openly. Through these interesting stories, we have a golden opportunity to see all the ‘what-ifs’ and be entertained at the same time.
Even though all the stories are great, Ethnomethodology is my favorite. I was utterly immersed in Sophie and the alien Ny'thei’s discussion. Ny’thei’s questions are frustrating at times and his temperamental mood can be bothersome, yet the human child Sophie has wisdom and patience that could be educational to adults. The alien is still wary of the presence of humans in their world and is perhaps seeking assurance in a less gracious kind of way. The interesting eye-opener about this story is that we could easily understand Ny’thei’s concern and think about our ethics as human beings.
All in all, Memes of Loss and Devotion is an unforgettable, enigmatic journey that readers will not forget. Intellectual and compelling, this is commendable material from Darren White and will attract a wide range of readers. That being said, not all the stories are easy to understand, but this is one of the charming qualities of the book.
