Melancholy’s Autograph is a journey into heartfelt prose and poetry, written by Sarah Lamar King. Each poem relates to different emotional aspects of a person’s life, ranging from the natural to the bizarre, from life to death and, in some instances, beyond. Each verse, on the surface, is just words on a page, but when you let them penetrate your skin, reaching deep inside your soul, you will start to feel emotions you never thought possible just moments ago.

The desire to read through until the very last page is stronger than any force field I have ever encountered. Sarah Lamar King’s ability to fluently and fully express herself is, to me, mind boggling. These are not words of one’s mouth, but rather of feelings, sights, sounds, experiences and more. I felt emotions stir within me which drew a smile, a grin, shock... and even tears. The combination of rhyming and non-rhyming poems keeps the brain alive, as it is tossed back and forwards from life to death, from now to then, and from powerful memories to memories which are no more. Some verses touch on the taboo – subjects of suicidal ideologies with powerful emotions thrown behind every single word.

My favorite poem, titled "I’m Still Here,” took me to a journey in my past, when I could be still here. As I read that particular poem, I visualized myself standing on a rooftop, screaming it to my abusive ex, showing him that he did not break me. Prior to reading Melancholy’s Autograph, I braced myself for a world of verse which touches on nonsensical fun, but instead, I came out on the other side with a feeling of completeness, glad that I decided to take the journey. I applaud Sarah Lamar King’s incredible writing talent, look forward to reading more of her work in the future, and recommend Melancholy’s Autograph to readers over 15 years who are not afraid to take the emotional journey of a lifetime.

Melancholy’s Autograph by Sarah Lamar King is a heartfelt and soulful collection of poems that will take readers out of their comfort zones and leave them overwhelmed. All the poems reflect the author’s perspective on life and leave a mark on the souls of readers. Though the poems deal with either the dark side of life or the bright side, the poems are raw, melancholy, filled with emotion, and readers can see hope and faith woven through her words. The poems, though minimalist in words, capture myriad thoughts, feelings, and emotions that will captivate readers with their expressions.

‘Empty’ captures autumn by terming it colors of death and the author weaves in human emotions throughout, making it effective and tangible to readers. Likewise, every poem has its own way of touching the hearts of readers. The first two contradictory lines in ‘Contrails’ set the tone of the poem and, in four lines, the poet captures the feelings of emptiness effectively. The poems speak of faith, hope, survival, loneliness, struggles, and diverse emotions, and enable readers to take a peek into their own life situations, inner strength, and how they perceive life in general. Life is hard and that is what the poems in the collection make you realize. Poetry lovers will love this collection and the poet’s sorrow and lament make it real and palpable to readers. The poet’s way of looking at life, her observations, and, her perceptions can be felt through her words.

Melancholy’s Autograph is a collection of short poems written by author Sarah Lamar King. Her feelings bleed upon the page in shades of red, blue, and black. One of the poems, “Mirror,” is interesting because all eight lines rhyme. Other poems like “Refugee” contain profound words like “Tears reveal what the heart can’t speak.” “Trial” will make you think: “To feel everything. And nothing. Simultaneously.” Throughout the book, you’ll find yourself wondering if the author is lamenting the death of a loved one, a breakup, a disease, and you probably won’t be sure which life-altering event she is experiencing. How can she escape it? The book contains elegiac poetry, which laments or refers to someone that’s gone or something that is missing. It could be a person who’s died, a relationship ended, a time in the past, or the author is lamenting a loss. It may be good medicine for both the author and the reader.

Melancholy’s Autograph is an interesting compilation of poetry and thoughts by Sarah Lamar King. “What is This Prison?” asks questions that many have asked when someone develops an illness. The answers are provided at the back of the book. The author pours her emotions out onto the pages using dark colors, but sometimes, softer, muted tones. “What is she going through?” you’ll find yourself asking about the author’s state of mind. This book contains a selection of deep, thought-provoking poems that will make you turn the page to see more. Melancholy’s Autograph is a mystery, which makes you wonder about the meaning of the title and the message behind the words.
